PD Requirements
There are specific legal requirements for professional development in the Michigan Revised School Code. Section 1562 states the requirement for all new teachers to receive during the first three years of teaching, “fifteen days of intensive professional development induction into teaching”. In addition, according to Section 1527, all teachers are required to have five days of professional development annually. this in in addition to the 15 days over three years required of new teachers.
Individuals who hold certain certificates (the Professional Education Certificate, the Occupational Education Certificate, and the School Psychologist Certificate) are required to have their certificates renewed every five years. The renewal requirements includes the completion of six semester hours of appropriate coursework through an approved institution, 18 SB-CEUs that can be earned through approved professional development opportunities, or a combination of both coursework and SB-CEUs.
School administrators are also required to complete six semester hours of appropriate coursework through an approved institution, 18 SB-CEUs that can be earned through approved professional development opportunities, or a combination of both coursework and SB-CEUs every five years for continued employment.
