Course will include facilitated discussion based on the book What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing to increase understanding of brain development and functioning and the impact of trauma and adversity. This includes increasing understanding of the way the brain processes information, the impact of stress and adversity, and the effect on relational, emotional, cognitive and behavioral functioning. Additionally, discussion will focus on state dependent functioning and the implications for learning as well as the sequence of engagement to promote optimal learning (Regulate, Relate, Reason). Finally, the components of a trauma-informed environment for learning: the 6Rs: relevant, rewarding, repetitive, rhythmic, relational, respectful will be described with practice of application.
